Story: jo, kona, granite, and me were going to backpack into this lake and then go up suicide peak the next day. We got kind of a late start, lost the trail in a snow field, and so we decided to just start heading up the peak we were closest to. Due to the lateness of our departure we were forced to make camp on a small shelf on the mountain side. The flattest spot we found was still steep enough that if you moved to carelessly on your sleeping pad, you would start to slide down the mountain. Our perch was small enough that looking at your feet, all you saw was the kenai peninsula. The only thing keeping me from sliding off was a small clump of tundra under my right butt cheek, that Granite kept trying to push me off of. Half way thorough the sleepless night it started to snow and blow, so we staked the tent fly over us, and that worked pretty well. Finally the sky began to brighten and the warm sun peeked over the ridge line. We scrambled up the rest of the way to the peek that we named disillusion.

So we went to Austin, about 3.5 hours away and found this sweet little canyon in Reimers county park. It was full of trees, moss, and ferns; a completely different world from the sand dunes and palm trees of corpus christi. There was also a natural spring that ran through the canyon down to the river, following this, we found an awesome rope swing that dropped you into the cool, refreshing, non salt water. later that night we went to the missy higgins and mason jennings concert. Good time fo sho!

time for a new running route?

so i'm still trying to find a good running route, too bad my choices are running on the sidewalk in the busy city or running down little streets full of stray dogs.
this morning i went running with my two little, hairy canines, kona and granite. as we went running past this "fenced in" yard, i noticed that part of the fence was not complete just as, not one, not two, but 5 huge rottweilers came tearing out under the fence and immediately surrounded my little running team. Lucky me, was stuck in the middle of the mass of snarling dogs, getting tangled up in leashes. the rottweilers kept cirlcling around us, and jumping at kona, a gnarly fight was about to erupt. i was struggling to maintain control of the situation, as you can imagine. i had pulled kona and granite in really close and set about yelling as harshly as i could while spinning 360's. the spinning method was a brilliant way to get as many kicks out as possible. as i spun around i would front kick with my right leg and then follow that with an immediate back kick with my left. it worked pretty well, kona and granite were shorter so i could kick over their heads and kick the rottweilers in the face as they lunged for us. the tension and was beginning to peak, and i was fresh out of options, when finally the owner of the dogs came running over and called/ pulled his dogs off. he gave his sincerest apologies, and my frazzled running team continued on our way. i could feel my adrenaline surging. amazingly enough, we were unscathed, kona just had dog slobber on her.
i think ive about run outta luck. needless to say, we found another route home.

so this morning, i was jogging along down the street,breathing in that wonderfully thick, humid air. in my own little world, when i suddenly noticed a large, black, vicious hairball of a dog running at me with a nice set of sharp teeth. to my surprise and dismay he was only about 6 feet away from me and coming(usually they bark or you can hear them them running towards you, but this fellow was a quit the ambusher). luckily my years of running and being chased by dogs has fine tuned my instincts for these kind of situations. my mouth instantly opened and my lungs erupted with a series of threats and commands in my most terrifying voice. lucky for me the dog skidded to a stop (much too close for comfort) instead of taking a chunk out of my exposed thigh. i backed away from him, still yelling, for a couple feet and then continued on my way. I'm glad i didn't have kona and granite w me, a fight would have surely arisen.

So this kemps ridley turtle was found in october with a tarp tangled around his neck, almost choking him to death. He was taken to the arc (a turtle recovery center) until his neck healed. Today we put a transmitter on him and then released him into the ocean, pretty cool. I also witnessed a ribbon snake catch a big tree frog by the hind leg and slowly swallow him whole. the frog wasn't too happy about the whole ordeal and put up a pretty good fight, but he eventually expended all his energy and got eaten, survival of the fittest. it was kind of sad, i was rooting for the cute frog.

So i made enough money doing odd jobs in UT to go climbing down in Red Rocks, (heaps and loads of fun!) and get back to idaho. And i finally had a small stroke of good luck, i got a job with the fish and game again until i leave for my sea turtle job in texas. So the past few weekes i've been feeding about 4,000 lbs of alfalfa and beet pellets to ~800 mule deer. it's pretty cool, we load 50 lb bags of pellets into sleds that we pull with snowmachines. we then drive over the sand dunes to the foothills and drop the pellets in piles along the feed lines. We also have been using a cat to haul pellets on and feed off of. it's awesome driving that thing straight up the little dunes, seriously, we get pretty close to perpendicular!

last friday, we had a crepe birthday party! it was put on by the awesome girls at Beuna Vista #2. we loaded the crepes with delightful toppings, such as blueberries, strawberries, bananas, whip cream, Etc. Sven and John put on a little concert for us with the mandalin and a chair for drums. pimpin party.

the next night we went to table at jordans, the corn bread, guitar playin, and wrestling match was a sweet time. we didn't really get to tableing though, ha

sunday was a series of unusual events for me. t-bor and elise got me to go to church with them, All of it! and then elise gave me this sexy dress to put on, put makeup on me, and tried to ringlet my dreds. only the ends curled, but she put it up somehow and it looked pretty good. hardly recognized myself. amazing what i can be convinced into doing. fun times fo sho!

so, the past few months have not turned out like i had planned, which is my fault because i didn't have a plan to begin with. but im still alive and barely making the bills, so far. I've been living in my truck with my dog. Very crammed and uncomfortable, but at least i have a truck. This past month I've had the cops sent after me for pan-handling with my guitar. Which, in the few times i've gone has been relatively successful. One afternoon, i made almost $40 an hour. I've been threatened to be arrested. I've slept in my truck with temperatures at only -30 degrees F. I found a new brand of dog food for granite, which she likes more and has been better on her digestive system; and lucky for me, is cheaper. most days i'm not sure how i make it to the end of the day with a relatively content stomach; thank goodness for the meager food supply in my tool box, good friends, and Great Harvest bread samples.
I was counting on working for Aspiro to make enough money to get by until i get a pay check from my job in Corpus Christii that will be starting mid march. So this whole past month has entailed: getting an interview for the job, waiting an extra week after my interview, going on my "trial week" (which went really well), having six days off in which i was positive i had the job, driving back to utah for my first official week of work only to be informed after i get to base camp, that they are overstaffed and not going to hire me. I was pretty shocked by the news. i had put this whole last month on the line for this job, when i could have been working somewhere else. instead i didn't make a single cent, i didn't get paid for my trial week, i had to pay $220 to get my truck out (which had been towed while i was at my trial week), and i spent the last of my money driving down to utah. So here i am, stuck in utah, with only 22 dollars in my bank account. Thank goodness for friends, yet again, they have been essential to my survival. My friend Marlayne has let me hang out at her place in Provo. And my friend emily, got me some odd jobs working for her sister, Laura. I've done some painting for her and worked around her yard. they are the nicest family with six little kids, that are so hilarious and cute. I have enjoyed running and hiking in the mountains here in utah, i love how they are so close where ever you go. And i went bouldering at the quarry with emily and darren when they came down for the weekend, that was a blast.
Why does life seem to revolve around money? Its a dark cloud that i can't get out from under lately. Well, got to go, my dog just threw up on Laura's carpet in her really nice house. WHY?!! love my life right now. peace out

Whoop ya for a BS in Biology, minor in Natural Resources!
It still hasn't hit me that i could be done with school for the rest of my life. I can't believe i graduated, there were a couple times i was more than a little worried that it wasn't going to happen. I totally agree with mary on that my years through college have been the most influential and adventurous years of my life. They definitely shaped the person I am today.

Love the memories of: my freshman year, when i still wore cute, girly clothes and washed my hair everyday; when i considered running only 3 miles a complete workout but i was still hard core enough to go running in -20 degree weather (dead serious-i got frost bite over my entire right ear); living in run down, cheap houses packed full of rec. major girls where everyday was an awesome adventure; sledding down the stairs; skateboarding down the old water slide at Porter Park with jo; playing basketball games on the little court outside our house; the endless pranks of moving the entire kitchen into someone's bedroom; gigantic hobo spiders; my very first mountain bike trip racing celeste down Little Kelly's on a dare (i crashed quit a few times); playing on one of the most intense girl's flag football teams that ever existed; learning how to rock climb with jo; going with sven on my first hour long run that changed my running world; learning the guitar; post holing up targhee to snowboard for free and then spooning in the broken down, freezing van on the way home; becoming spontaneous with most all my decisions and adventures and realizing this was a much funner way to go through life (hence the end of my life plan haha); my first huge lead fall that left me scraped and bruised and with nearly a cracked skull, but i walked away the wiser; sitting in that same broken down van for hours with sven and jo, waiting for the cops to find us in the middle of nowhere, eating peanut butter and oatmeal and then almost blowing up the van when our home made camp stove rolled into the puddle of spilled oil while still on fire; lifting weights 3 days a week, four years in a row; running up the R Mountain for the first time with mary and keith; bouldering at sticks and stones with most of my best friends; running my first marathon with mary; tableing; Thanksgiving trips to california with jo and brian, free slices of bread at Great Harvest; hours upon hours of studying for my biology and chemistry classes and then forgetting everything after the final; the fabulous summer in San Diego with jo- rock climbing, buggy boarding with my waterproof cast (plastic bag and duct tape), eating the best tasting oranges from our backyard, engulfing the entire BBQ in flames, eating peanut butter yummies and home made pizza, and attempting to surf; the phenomenal month long adventure near Moab known as Spring Summit; my next awesome summer in Alaska with mary, keith, Cramer, Jedd, and Jordon-climbing until midnight, chasing wild grizzly bears, running in the rain, month long GIARDIA, hiking and mountain biking in the chugach mountain range, slackling over a gorge, crossing glacier cold rivers, wakeboarding behind a tiny motor boat, and playing with grizzly bear cubs; volunteering for the fish and game; sweet rock climbing trips to places like City of Rocks with marcus, jo, tolman, craig, and corey; trip to Havaisupi with jo, angela, becky, mary, and jens; getting my lovable puppy; Hiking the Grand Teton; slackling; learning to kayak from some of my best friends, mary, marcus, and carla; going home to ride horses with my brother jon; mountain biking down wolverine; living in the Big Lost River Range completely alone with my dog-amazing we never got eaten; and last but not least idaho sunsets.
I love the life i have and the friends that have helped to mold it.
Who knows what lies ahead in my life, but i hope all my friends will still be intertwined in it.

Banana Cream Puddin

So, my roommate Kourtney had a bunch of food she was giving away-end of the semester-and so me and T-bird gladly took it upon ourselves to relieve her of these goods. Doing so quadrupled my food supply, which wasn't very hard to do. Amongst my new found, good tasting, life sustaining, treasures we found BANANA CREAM pudding. And since i had also just acquired a new box of powdered milk, me and T-bird instantly set about making this free fabulous dessert. All went pretty smoothly until we put it in the jam packed freezer. we shoved it into the back and then noticed some cookies n cream ice cream that belonged to one of my roommates. It was a little to tempting, and i opened the lid, peered inside, and noticed it was getting freezer burn and was still almost full. perfectly good ice cream going to waste. needless to say me and t-bird began taking unnoticeable samples from this frozen treat. when suddenly we heard one of my roommates coming in, with unbelievable speed we put the ice cream away but as i was pulling my arm out of the freezer, while shutting the door, my elbow bumped our still hot, liquefied pudding! and... it spewed out into the freezer, down the front of the fridge, over my arm, down my front, and onto the floor! but amazingly enough, i was able to catch the pot and salvage 1/3 of it, hurray for pudding! While almost peeing my pants with laughter i began to lick to burning liquid off my arm while still holding the pot.
Jamming the pot back into the freezer, me and t-bird set about cleaning up the mess by eating/licking all the edible pudding, "you can't waste good food," and wiping up the rest with toilet paper. We didn't have any paper towels ok. To make this short story even longer, as we were "cleaning," to our surprise and despair, the pot began to slide out of the freezer again! T-bird caught it this time, more pudding spilled into the freezer but most of it was saved. Taking no more chances, we taped the pot into the freezer, and finished cleaning up the mess. The pudding was finally able to solidify after we shut the clean, freezer door. While waiting for it to set up, we bouldered through my house using the thick door frames. Pulling the pudding out a while later, we enhanced the remainder of our dessert by dipping t-bird's oreos into it. If you haven't cracked a smile yet, the funny thing is, we never saw my roommate, she never came into the kitchen, so this dramatic event happened over nothing, haha. it was well worth the entertainment though.

finally updating once again. a couple weeks ago me and sven went climbing at the Crank Caves, the new place Dean has been setting routes on, its a pretty sweet spot!
I onsight led up a 5.11a= whoop YA! It was a really fun new route. Dean was there that day too, setting up this awesome route under a huge roof. Good times had by all. I miss climbing outside

The 1st annual grassroots kelly canyon organic and wild mountain marathon!

So for the past few weeks jo, me, and jon have been clocking out 26.2 miles in the mountains for our own marathon. we then proceeded to clear the trails of all major trees and brush, then last friday mary and becky came to idaho. me, jo, mary, becky, carla, carrie, and sven did alittle climbing at heise rock. On saturday we headed up the mountain for a 26 mile run. sven and t-bor ran part of the marathon with me, mary, granite, and kona, and jo biked it with us. Carla, carrie, and becky did a fabulous job setting up three, much needed aid stations. It was an awesome, beautiful marathon with all the fall colors! we were pretty wasted at the end, a lot of uphill! we found a hot tub to soak in afterwards and then headed to johnny carinos, i was sooo hungry! Carla and carrie were working there that night and hooked us up with free drinks, dessert, and a discount on all our food! Sweet weekend, whoop ya!

I went climbing today with jo, carrie, and carla at paramount. it was cold and windy put still really fun :)

me n Jo went backpacking w/ the dogs to Round lake, Rough lake, Big lake, Golden Lake, and Long lake
It looked like it could rain the first night so we put up a make shift shelter and crammed inside with the two dogs. We also built a fire, just in case any bears showed up. Kona didn't seem to enjoy our small shelter and kept bracing her back against jo and pushing against the rock wall, providing a little more room for herself while smashing the rest of us. Granite didn't seem to mind and passed out completely. We also kept waking up to keep the fire going and make sure we hadn't started the entire forest on fire. Finally about 2 o' clock in the morning we moved out of our shelter, it was too small and the sky had cleared up. We were only able to sleep off and on, waking up to hear the dogs growling at things in the dark (never very comforting). Dawn finally came, and with it an army of mosquitos out for blood. We tried to sleep in for a while but the mosquitos were unbearable. So we packed up camp and hiked out to see the other lakes. I've had better nights while camping but it was still an awesome adventure!

i went out to Cartier slough to do amphibian surveys with rusty this morning but it was too windy and cold, we didn't find anything. i wanted to work with jo the rest of the day, but ended up just fixing fence out in the wind. At least i had the dogs around for somebody to talk to, sometimes it gets lonely working completely alone miles away from anyone. i saw a huge porcupine though, it was kind of intense keeping the dogs away from him. i also saw three white tail does. As i fight through the brush, i'm getting pretty good at gathering small branches, leaves, bugs, and who knows what else, in my dreds.

Me and Jo went climbing near blackfoot at a place called the Playground. it's got some pretty fun climbs. me and jo both led our first 5.11's!! Hoot Yah! it was almost dark when we pulled out and we heard something kinda thump, but we didn't think anything of it and drove home. when we got home, we discovered that my tail gate had fallen down. Luckily the dogs were o.k. the gate on their kennel was off, so you can imagine their horror going home, watching things fly out of the truck and pushing their paws down against the bed to keep the kennel from sliding out. to my gut wrenching horror my climbing bag had fallen out! we figured, including my backpack, my gear, and my rope inside, it totalled out to around $400. We quickly jumped back in and drove the same route back. Amazingly enough, my backpack was sitting in the dirt where we had parked, SOOOO Happy! so from now on i will check my tail gate. it was an awesome little climbing trip, good times.

Three days ago i started working for the Fish and Game. I'll be working for fisheries doing creel surverys and will work as a habitat/wildlife technician also. It should be a fun summer.

End of semester vacation

The day after my finals i headed down to salt lake with tiffany and granite (on my lap the whole way). we went running the next morning and met up with jo (who had been visiting family in utah) to go climbing at american fork canyon. later that day me and marcus left early for Moab to go raft/kayak Westwater. Granite played with another dog at the neighbors house, i think she would have been miserable in the rain and careening raft. The rapids were pretty awesome, the other girl in my boat hid easter eggs in the raft for us, mmm chocalate! We met up with tiffany, jeremy, bruce, stevo, jake, and dorry to bike porcupine rim. it was so fun! granite kept up the whole way like a champ, and i hit some good jumps. later that day mary and sven met us. We went climbing at wall street the next day. We also slacklined at the park, napped at the park, and biked Soveirgn Trail. Riding back on this trail, i took one hard crash (which is pretty good for me). i was climbing up some rocks and i started to tip but i couldn't get out my clip pedals because they had too much sand in them, so i slammed down on my left elbow and forearm, which swelled up later, it felt great, but the biggest bummer was that i had broken half of my brake handle off. Despite that it was a really good trip.

Fun Weekend

Last weekend we went down to Moab. Marcus, Angela and her sisters ran the half marathon (good job guys) and the rest of us biked Amasaback trail.

Wahoo for warm california sun in november

So, me and jo decided,(last minute of course)to drive to california for a few days during our thanksgiving break. We headed out and drove late into the night and early into the next morning before stopping at a rest stop to sleep. We drove the rest of the way there the next day. i loved how every time we got out to fill up my truck, it felt warmer and warmer outside! The first night we got to cali, we camped out by the beach. the next morning we went running down to the beach with kona. Kona's first visit to the beach! Then we ran back to camp and headed to DISNEYLAND! We went on tons of rides, bought ice-cream and chocalate, and saw the fireworks show. I think splash mountain and peter pan were my favorite. We headed down south that night and stopped at a rest area to sleep, it was so busy all night. And a few guys parked next to us for a while that were kind of creepy; the door on the shell that we put on my truck couldn't lock, so that made it even more creepy. but we tied it down with some rope. The next morning we headed to play on the beach. the waves were pretty big, and a few of them were dragging us back into the wave after we dove under them. i was getting really hammered and i'll admit, a little scared, we all know my about my superb swimming skills. We built a sand castle, kona destroyed it, and then we made dinner on the beach and played guitar. it was an awesome day! the water wasn't even too cold. oh, and this guy that was fishing caught a small Leopard Shark. We got to hold it and set it loose in the ocean, it was pretty sweat! The little creature kept trying to swing his head back and bite my hand, he felt so cool. We went and slept at our old house that night, in clairemont, the summer me and jo lived down in cali. the last day we went to mission gorge and rock climbed, it was so warm and nice! we climbed a fun slabby route and a route with a cool little crack. One the way home we visited lizette, and the next morning she bought us both breakfast! i really like hanging out with lizette, she's has a cool personality and is always crackin me up. We said our goodbye's and headed north. Awesome trip, i think it was my favorite thanksgiving.
